This volume studies the various forms of ethnic autonomy envisioned
within and outside the purview of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian
Constitution. It explores the role of the British Indian
administration and the Constituent Assembly of India in the
introduction and inclusion of the schedule and the special
provisions granted under it. Drawing on case studies from the
states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Sikkim in Northeast India
and Darjeeling in West Bengal, it examines whether the practice of
granting autonomy has been able to fulfil the political aspirations
of the ethnic communities and how far autonomy settles or eases
conflict. It also discusses sub-state nationalism and if it can be
accommodated within autonomy, and studies the views of the central
government and state governments towards such autonomy. An
important contribution towards understanding India’s federal
structure, the volume will be indispensable to students and
researchers of politics, democracy, Indian Constitution, law,
self-governance, political theory and South Asian studies.

This book offers an understanding of the expectations and
challenges of Northeast India in the context of India's Act East
policy. It critically examines how the policy is being pursued by
the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government and
analyses its relevance from local perspectives. Contributors to the
book provide an examination of the differences between Look East
and Act East policy and explanations of the expectations of India's
neighboring countries, particularly Myanmar, towards Northeast
India. They ask the following questions: a) What is to be done to
integrate India's Northeast region meaningfully into the Act East
policy? What is the motive of linking this policy with these
states? How is this policy received by the local communities? b)
What are the challenges of the Northeast region? What are their
needs and priorities? How can these states showcase their
potentials to Southeast Asia and East Asia? c) What is the
significance of the changes from Look to Act East Policy? Has the
regime change affected the continuity in the policy? What are the
short- and long-term goals? d) What are the expectations of
Southeast Asia and East Asia? By addressing these questions, they
bridge the knowledge gaps that exist in the understating of the the
Northeast region of India vis-a-vis the Act East policy. The first
book to combine a balanced view of India's Act East policy and
Northeast India, it will be of interest to policy makers and
academics in the fields of Development Studies, International
Relations, Northeast India and South Asian Politics.

India's Northeast has long been riven by protracted armed conflicts
for secession and movements for other forms of autonomy. This book
shows how the conflicts in the region have gradually shifted
towards inter-ethnic feuds, rendered more vicious by the ongoing
multiplication of ethnicities in an already heterogeneous region.
It further traces the intricate contours of the conflicts and the
attempts of the dominant groups to establish their hegemonies
against the consent of the smaller groups, as well as questions the
efficacy of the state's interventions. The volume also engages with
the recurrent demands for political autonomy, and the resultant
conundrum that hobbles the region's economic and political
development processes. Lucid, topical and thorough in analysis,
this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in political
science, sociology, development studies and peace & conflict
studies, particularly those concerned with Northeast India.

important reference for anyone currently working in the food
industry or those entering the industry. It provides realistic,
practical, and very usable information about key aspects of food
safety, while also systematically approaching the matter of
foodborne illness by addressing the intricacies of both prevention
and control. This book discusses ways to assess risk and to employ
epidemiological methods to improve food safety. In addition, it
also describes the regulatory context that shapes food safety
activities at the local, national, and international levels and
looks forward to the future of food safety.

Principles and Application of Evidence-Based Public Health Practice
helps clinicians who conduct population-based studies in the
community be aware of the principles and ethics involved in public
health research. Further, the book helps social scientists involved
in public health, especially regarding the medical implication of
public health practice. Community-based epidemiological research
studies are vital for any public health activities, be it
evaluation of health programs, health systems strengthening,
surveillance or preventive/promotive trials in the community. While
hospital/clinic-based research is conducted in a very controlled
setting, community trials are more practical. Community-based
studies require a fairly different set of ethical and
epidemiological principles to be followed. The same has been
reiterated in the ethical guidelines for biomedical research on
human subjects released by various national research organizations.

Plant Hormones in Crop Improvement examines the signaling pathways
and mechanisms associated with phytohormones, with particular focus
on stress resilience. The growing population of world and
unpredictable climate puts pressure on the agriculture production.
Current constraints such as increasing temperatures, drought,
salinity, cold, nutrient deficiency, along with biotic interactions
trigger exquisitely tuned responsive mechanisms in plants. The main
coordinators of all stress-related mechanisms are phytohormones,
which can be transported over long distances and play a significant
role in controlling physiological, agronomic and growth traits,
metabolites and sustained crop productivity. Therefore,
understanding the mechanisms influencing the stress responses
mediated by phytohormones is crucial to ensure the continuity of
agricultural production and food security. This book aims to
address sustainable agricultural approaches to improve biotic and
abiotic stress resilience in crop plants, covering different topics
from perception and signaling plant hormones to physiological and
molecular changes under different cues. Plant Hormones in Crop
Improvement is an essential read for students, researchers and
agriculturalists interested in plant physiology, plant genetics and
crop yield improvement.
In 21st century there has been a shift in the way the problems
related to people with disabilities (PWDs) are sought to be
addressed. Focus is on making the environment barrier free.
However, as of now, PWDs are yet to gain equal access to various
civic amenities in the society. There is little doubt that
transport holds the key for enabling the PWDs. Their mobility is
seriously constrained due to inadequate public transport
facilities. In fact, the level of development of a society can be
judged by the extent to which its transport system is accessible to
PWDs. This requires regular audit of the public transport system.
Unfortunately, research on this aspect is scarce in India. The
authors of this book have attempted to fill this void by providing
such data from a city in northern India. This work will be of help
to enable the people with disabilities to participate effectively
in society, especially in poor resource countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that India has
the second largest number of smokers in the world after China. The
present study was an attempt to assess the public understanding and
support for smoke-free legislations and to ascertain the level of
compliance of general public to Section 4 (prohibition of smoking
in a public place) under COTPA in a district of North India. Around
25.3 % of the studied population was current smokers. Almost 33%
perceive that smoking gives pleasure, 86% believes smoking is
harmful for health, 68% perceive it as economic burden to
family.Around 85% of studied population had knowledge about smoking
ban at public places. Around 92.8 % of places have displayed "No-
smoking" signage and 94.4% of places were found free of smoke. The
simple and inexpensive methodology of study provided a reliable
estimate of smoking in public places which can be easily replicable
in other settings. The study can serve a useful tool to inform
policy makers, enforcement officials, researchers and academicians
across globe.
Salutogenesis is relatively new concept and less explored area in
the field of Health Promotion. The theory explained why some people
remained healthy despite being exposed to psychological or
pathological risk factors in terms of Sense of Coherence (SOC)
& General Resistance Resources. Students from Manipur, a state
in the North East India migrate to other part of India for higher
studies. This book showed the results of comparison of SOC &
Health Promoting Behaviors between two different ethnic groups of
students-Manipuri (Mongoloids) vs North Indian (Caucasian). It also
showed the correlation between SOC and Health Promoting Lifestyle
Profile. The results showed specific health needs of migrant
Manipuri students. The difference in health promoting activities
warranted specific strategic planning. Overall, the book
highlighted the urgent need for inculcating health promotion
activities among younger generation. This book will be useful for
Medical and Non-Medical research scholars, Policy makers,
Educationists, and of course students who are interested in
research on health promotion and salutogenesis.
This book describes the theory of relativistic (e, 2e) processes
using one photon exchange approximation on different geometrical
arrangements. Using S-matrix approach, triple differential cross
section (TDCS) has been derived in terms of atomic transition
charge density, atomic transition current density and interference
between them. TDCS is also derived in terms of longitudinal part,
transverse part and interference between them. The explicit
expressions are derived for spin asymmetries using transversely and
longitudinally polarized incident electrons on unpolarized target
atoms. Dirac spinors with positive and negative helicity are
discussed in detail. The double differential cross section (DDCS)
has been expressed in terms of longitudinal and transverse
contributions and shown that the interference between them is zero
which verifies Fano theorem. Electron kinematic factors are
expressed explicitly for transversely and longitudinally polarized
incident electrons.
